Founded in 2021 by Kyle Fuller.
The Software Initiative started around a simple idea: software should only ever make your life easier. Kyle has spent over twenty years in .NET, and fifteen in e-commerce — as a senior developer, team and project lead, department manager, project manager, and application architect, on SaaS products that have been in production for years and on desktop and mobile applications.
Our e-commerce work includes storefronts, orders, third-party API integrations, and the systems behind them. Now, alongside building custom software, we use AI to quickly streamline how a team works and help them get more done.
Based in Omaha, and happy to come to your office. We take on a small number of clients on purpose — the ones we have get our attention, and we can say no to work that isn’t a fit. When a build needs more hands, we bring in people we’ve worked with before and stay accountable for the whole thing.

About the AI work
Is AI going to replace our employees?
No. The work we go looking for is the part of someone’s job they’d be glad to hand over — the copying, the reformatting, the report nobody wants to build, the second read-through at the end of a long day. But it isn’t only about taking things away. The same person, with AI built into how they work, gets through the rest of it dramatically faster and catches more on the way. We’re trying to make people harder to do without, not easier to replace.
We already use ChatGPT. What would you actually do?
If you’re only opening it when you have a question, you’re getting a fraction of what’s there. What we’re after is changing how the work gets done — AI built into the workflow itself, so your team is using it constantly without really thinking about it. Connected to the systems where the work actually lives, with the checks that make the output worth trusting, and one person’s hard-won prompt becoming something everyone gets by default.
Do we need a software team for any of this?
No. Plenty of it has nothing to do with code — bookkeeping, invoicing, reporting, the weekly admin that quietly eats a day. Software teams have their own version of the same problem and we do that work too, but it isn’t a requirement.
How quickly would we see something?
Quickly. Most of this work is small by nature — one tedious task at a time — so the first useful piece often lands in days, not quarters. That cuts both ways in your favor: you find out early whether it’s worth going further, without having committed much to get there.
Who maintains all this once it’s running?
We can, if you’d like us to. But the more useful answer is that you mostly won’t need us. These systems change by being told to change: when someone notices it’s missing a step, or handling something in a way they don’t like, they say so and it adjusts. That’s deliberate — we’d rather leave your team able to shape it themselves than dependent on us every time something should work a little differently.

How long does a custom software project take?
Longer — a real application is a real project, and we’d rather say so than quote you two weeks. But we’d also rather break it into pieces that each do something useful on their own than disappear for six months and come back with all of it at once. You should be getting something you can actually use along the way, not just status reports.
We’re a small Omaha business. Are we too small for this?
Usually the opposite. Small teams feel repetitive work more sharply because there’s nobody to hand it to — and they can change how they work without a committee.
What does custom software cost?
It depends on the build, but we’ll give you a real range early rather than after four discovery calls. Most projects work best broken into pieces that each deliver something usable. If a project doesn’t make financial sense, we’d rather tell you up front.
Do you work outside Omaha?
Yes — remote is normal. But if you’re in the Omaha, Council Bluffs, or Lincoln area we’ll come to you, and for a first conversation especially, being in the room is worth a lot.
