It is the one everybody reaches for, because a clean slate sounds simpler than understanding what is already there. In practice it means paying twice — once to keep the old system alive while the new one is built, and again for every quiet thing the old one did that nobody wrote down.
Modernizing in pieces costs less, keeps the business running, and leaves you free to change direction after any one of them. Sometimes the right answer is to leave a stable old system exactly where it is and build around it.
Straight answers
Do we have to rewrite the whole thing from scratch?
Almost never, and we’ll push back if someone tells you otherwise. Full rewrites are where budgets go to die. Modernizing in pieces keeps the business running and spreads the cost over time — and leaves you free to change direction, or stop, after any one of them. If a full rebuild really is the right answer, we’ll say that too — and how far it goes is your call.
Our system was built by a developer who left. Can you really pick it up?
Yes. A codebase whose author is gone is the ordinary starting point for this work, not the exception — the first thing we hand back is a plain-English map of what exists and what shape it’s in.
What if the system is too old to save?
Then we’ll tell you that, with reasons, and lay out what a replacement actually costs. Sometimes the honest answer is to keep a stable old system exactly as it is and modernize around it.
