The clearest example: a software team
Development work is where this is easiest to see, because the tedium there is so well defined. Five things we look at first — and every one of them happens before a person picks the work up:
- Triage before a ticket is opened — the problem identified, checked against what’s already known, and written up before it reaches anyone
- Error logs watched and classified — sorted, grouped and filed as they arrive, so the day doesn’t start in a log table
- Tickets that carry enough detail to act on — the context, a plan for the change, and the code it’s likely to touch, already attached
- Unit tests already in place — the automated checks that prove a change works, written before the work starts, so what “done” means is settled up front
- A first pass on code review — the mechanical problems found before they cost a second developer an afternoon

The work gets done ahead of the person, never in place of them.
What goes away is the cold start, not the job. A back office runs on the same idea — the weekly report drafted before Monday, the invoice batch sorted against rules you set, the follow-up email written and waiting on a yes.
Straight answers
Is AI going to replace our employees?
No. The work we go looking for is the part of a job nobody would miss — the copying, the reformatting, the summary assembled by hand every Friday, the second read-through at the end of a long day. Hand that over and the same person spends more of the week on what you hired them for, and catches more while they’re at it. The aim is to make people harder to do without. If cutting the team is the goal, we’re the wrong people to call.
Is this only for companies with a development team?
No. Plenty of this work never goes near code — bookkeeping, invoicing, reporting, the weekly admin that quietly eats a day. Software teams have their own version of the same problem, which is why they get a section of their own above.
We’re a small Omaha business. Is AI overkill for us?
Usually it’s the reverse. A small team feels repetitive work harder, because there’s no department to hand it to — and it can change how it works on a Tuesday without convening anyone. The starting point is one tedious task, not a program.
Which AI tools should we buy?
Often none, to begin with. The subscription is the easy part, and rarely the part that changes anything. We’d rather look at the work first: sometimes the answer is a tool you already pay for, used properly; sometimes it’s a small piece of custom automation; sometimes it’s leaving a process alone. Would you build AI into the software we sell?
Yes, if that’s the job. Most of what we do concerns how a team works rather than what it sells, because that’s where the returns come fastest and it doesn’t wait on a product roadmap. But building software is our trade — if the feature belongs in your product, say so and we’ll scope it with you.
Our data is sensitive. Does it end up training some model?
That’s a configuration and policy question, and it’s part of the guardrails work: choosing tools and settings so your data is handled the way you need, and writing down the rules so your team doesn’t have to guess.
